Bible Verses to Encourage a Friend

By the Fig Devotional team · October 30, 2026

Sometimes you know a friend is struggling and don't know what to say. A verse can say it for you. Keep your message short, add a line that shows you're thinking of them, and let them know there's no need to reply.

A blessing to send anyone

“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)

You could add: "This is my prayer for you today."

For a friend who has lost hope

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Romans 15:13 (KJV)

You could add: "Holding onto hope for you, on the days it's hard to hold yourself."

For a friend who feels unfinished

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”

Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

You could add: "God isn't done, and neither are you."

For a friend who feels unloved

“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV)

You could add: "I read this and thought of you. You are so loved."

For a friend facing an uncertain future

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

These words were first sent to people in exile, in the middle of a long, hard season, which is part of why they comfort so many people today.

You could add: "Praying for you as you wait on what's next."

For the friend who is always there for you

“A friend loveth at all times”

Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)

You could add: "Thank you for being this for me."

Why a small message matters

Paul asked the early believers to do exactly this for one another:

“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV)

If you'd rather send something beautiful than plain text, every Fig Devotional keepsake is made to be shared, and only the card is shared, never your reflection. A handwritten note works just as well. It's the thought that reaches them.

Common questions

What is a good Bible verse to send a friend who is struggling?

Numbers 6:24-26 and Romans 15:13 are both written as blessings, so they read naturally in a message. Psalm 34:18 can be a comfort to a friend who is grieving.

What should I say when I send a friend a Bible verse?

Keep it short and personal. A line like, I thought of you when I read this, is usually enough. You don't need to explain the verse or try to fix anything.

How do I encourage a friend who doesn't feel like talking?

A short message that asks for no reply can mean a lot. Tell them they don't need to answer and that you're praying for them.
