Bible Verses for Anxiety and Worry

By the Fig Devotional team · October 30, 2026

Anxiety often arrives without an invitation: at three in the morning, on the drive to an appointment, or for no reason you can name. These verses aren't a quick fix. They're words to hold onto while you wait for your mind to settle. Read one slowly, and let it be enough for now.

When your mind won't settle

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

"Be careful for nothing" means "don't be anxious about anything." Paul follows it with a practice: name what you need, give thanks, and leave it with God.

When the worry feels too heavy

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

The word is all, not only the worries that seem important enough. Small fears count too.

When you're afraid

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

The reason not to fear isn't that nothing frightening is happening. It's that you aren't alone in it.

When you're worrying about tomorrow

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

Jesus doesn't deny that days can be hard. He asks you to carry only today's portion.

When your thoughts are racing

“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

Psalm 94:19 (KJV)

The psalmist had a crowded mind too. Comfort met him right there, in the middle of the thoughts.

When you need peace

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

John 14:27 (KJV)

Jesus said this on the night before He died, to friends who were about to be very afraid.

A short prayer for an anxious mind

Lord, my mind won't be still. I give You what I'm afraid of, as many times as I need to today. Be near me, and quiet what I can't quiet myself. Amen.

Scripture can sit alongside other kinds of help. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, your health or your daily life, please talk with your doctor or a counselor. Getting support is a wise and faithful thing to do.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

The Bible invites people to bring their worries to God in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 and 1 Peter 5:7 are two of the best-known passages on it. Scripture treats anxiety as something to carry to God, not something to hide from Him.

What is the most comforting Bible verse for anxiety?

Many people turn to Philippians 4:6-7, which pairs prayer with the peace of God, and Isaiah 41:10, which begins, Fear thou not; for I am with thee.

Is it a sin to feel anxious?

Feeling anxious is part of being human, and many faithful people in Scripture felt afraid. The Bible's response is an invitation to bring that fear to God.
